We attended a party in our home village. Monica and I ordered matching pink doily outfits six months in advance! All the women in our family got dressed up to celebrate together. The event however was not what we were led to believe.

We went out to the fields and took our shoes off once we had arrived. Then we walked closer to the sound of singing and chanting. I saw most of the women of our village dancing & singing together near a very large bolder which had blood and feathers all around it. As we stood there our village brother leaned over to Monica & me and said, “Do you remember the story of Elijah and Baal? This is Baal.” I wish I was making this up but I am not. That day the women of our village went around to all of the false gods/fetishes of our village singing and dancing and asking for rain, food, drinking water and good health.

My heart still breaks thinking about it but the words our Supyire story crafter used in our story of “Elijah and the prophets of Baal” (1 Kings 18) could not be truer. As Elijah stands confronting the people of Israel and the false prophets he asks, “When are you going to dance for the True God and not this other?” Please pray for the Supyire, that they would know and dance before the One True God and not the “others” they have known their entire lives.
